Melissa E. Hickman
Pathways to Vitality Initiative
Melissa is the program director for the Pathways to Vitality Initiative in the Episcopal Diocese of Indianapolis. With oversight by the Canon to the Ordinary, she is responsible for developing and implementing program, communications and fundraising strategies to enhance parish vitality and financial literacy in the diocese. She also provides project management support to the Ministerial Excellence Fund that awards grants to clergy and their families experiencing financial crisis and stress.
A third-generation Episcopalian in the diocese, Melissa is the principal and senior consultant for HickmanStone Consulting providing strategic planning, marketing and fundraising counsel to a variety of clients including the Indiana State Museum and 5MetaCom, among others.
She served as the Vice President for Seminary Advancement at Christian Theological Seminary, Indianapolis, where she rebuilt fundraising operations, supervised marketing and served on the executive committee from 2011 to 2014.
For most of her career, Melissa and her husband, Vaughn, owned and operated Hickman+Associates, Inc., an award-winning advertising and public relations agency serving Fortune 500 companies, non-profits and foundations across the country. Upon Vaughn’s retirement in 2009, the couple “declared victory” and closed the agency after 42 years in business.
Melissa is an active community volunteer. She has her executive fundraising certificate from the Fundraising School at the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, and she holds a degree from Butler University. She worships at St. Paul’s in Indianapolis.
